This is my painting for the latest challenge for Karin Janik's Different Strokes from Different
Folks blog.... a timely subject for the happening in Washington now. It's quite different than anything I've ever done and I'm really rather happy with it. A night or two before the photo for the challenge came up, I was taken with the lovely lights from the windows of our house one snowy night and as always when something moves me, I was wondering how I could capture it with paint. The photo seemed a good way to try my first night scene painting. I tried first to do it with gouache with no success (I made a mess of the sky) and then started over with watercolor. I used some gouache in spots towards the end.... splattering the stars and brightening up the lights.

Oh, I love your sky, all those stars : ) They are beautiful , very nice piece.
The stars are a great addition!

Beautiful! I wanted to put stars in mine, but chickened out. Yours looks just like how I would have liked mine to look. :)
Nicely done! I especially like how yu can see the greenish interior between the pillars.
Dominique, Kathleen, Lesley, and R. Garriot, Thank you all for taking time to write. I am really thrilled that my painting has brought some positive response. I practiced a lot before I dared to splatter the stars.... only had one that looked like a comet.
This is absolutely stunning!! The stars are incredible!!
I think it's interesting that you're one of the few that added the stars. I love it! Wish I did that. I'm just getting back into painting, but I loved this challenge. A night scene is definitely something new for me, too. Great job!
Thanks, Cherri. I like your J. Memorial painting too.
I have been meaning to come to your site and comment on how much I admire your submissions to DSFDF. Your work boots are super, and the Victorian house, stunning. I particularly like the orangish sunrise/set sky. This Jefferson Monument is among my top favorites of the project...you do excellent work. I'm adding your site to my blog list as a follower. Keep up the good work. And try to stay out of harm's way with Mount Redoubt...
Wow, I'm honored with your praise, James. I'm pretty far from Redoubt in SE Alaska but kind of remember haze from it when it erupted last time.
Very well lit up.. :) It's perfect
Thank you Ramana! I do appreciate the positive critique.
