Edge of the Field

This is a view from one of my walking routes, along the Salmon River in Gustavus.  I painted it in February before going to Florida to visit relatives and have cataract surgery.  When I came home in March it looked a lot different than I remembered..... everything did.... and I adjusted some of the color and found a lot of things to fix.  Since the surgery things are much brighter.... I squint now looking out the window at our snow covered field.  Colors are more vivid; most amazing are blues.

Finally......

 

This is a collage of some of my small postcard-size watercolors, painted in 2014 and 2015.  These were all views from my south facing windows.   I was able to get two images  from most of the paintings.  I did this last winter and it was in my show in Juneau in July.

Though this is old, finally, I'm back posting on this blog, such as it is or has been. When I'm painting regularly, putting things here and on my other blog seem to keep me going.

Delphiniums and Icelandic Poppies

I painted most of the poppies in this last summer but was at the Greuning Cabin residency when the delphiniums were in bloom, so finished it this summer.   I brought each flower in to paint in the studio.  With all the dry weather this year, the spikes were rather small.

The background is black gouache.  I painted it twice.  The first background was a bluish grey, but turned out very splotchy, which almost brought me to tears.

Sandy Beach

Looking up the channel from Sandy Beach on Douglas Island, Juneau.  The building is was left of a pump house for an old gold mine.

Moose Family

 I painted this from a photo I took several years ago.  These guys hung around the area all summer and I'm probably still seeing them off and on.... I hope so.  I can't tell one from the other unless they are tagged.

Along the Coast

I've been so busy with my other blog, I forget that this one is here.  I do keep working in the studio on oil painting, though very slowly.   After years of watercolor painting,  I guess I go overboard with the ease of changing things with oils.

This is from a photo I took in Sitka Alaska, but I changed rocks and islands, so I want say where exactly it is.

Sunlit Pines

 I spent untold hour painting this.  It is on a cradled birch panel.  I probably worked on it many more hours than I needed too, and if I didn't stop myself would have kept on going for a lot longer.  Finally put my name on it and stopped looking at it for a few weeks ago and now it looks OK.

On the Berm

My husband and I have been going to Florida this time of year for the last few years, but this year we decided to stay home.  And I'm so glad we did.  It has been beautiful with lots of sunny days and lovely snow.

This is one of several paintings I've worked on in the last couple of months, from a photo taken on a nearby path.  The berm is from a drainage ditch that was dug years ago.
